What Is Medication Management?

Medication management is a service that helps you explore whether mental health medication may be helpful, understand your options, and monitor how treatment is working over time.

It is more than simply receiving a prescription. It is an ongoing partnership with a qualified medical provider who considers your symptoms, personal history, treatment goals, current medications, and overall well-being.

Your provider will work with you to understand what you are experiencing, discuss potential treatment options, explain possible benefits and side effects, and make adjustments when clinically appropriate.

Our goal is to help you feel better, not to change who you are.

Medication is not the right choice for everyone. Some people benefit from therapy alone, while others benefit from medication, a combination of medication and therapy, or a different approach altogether. We will work with you to explore the options that best fit your individual needs.

How Can Medication Management Help?

Our providers work with individuals experiencing a variety of mental health concerns, including:

  • Anxiety: Persistent worry, racing thoughts, panic, or feeling constantly on edge.
  • Depression: Low mood, loss of interest, low energy, or difficulty enjoying everyday life.
  • ADHD: Challenges with attention, organization, impulsivity, or managing daily responsibilities.
  • Mood disorders: Significant changes in mood, energy, motivation, or emotional stability.
  • Trauma-related symptoms: Ongoing distress, heightened alertness, or difficulty feeling safe after difficult experiences.
  • Obsessive-compulsive symptoms: Intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that interfere with daily life.
  • Other mental health concerns: When appropriate, our providers can evaluate your symptoms and help determine what treatment options may be suitable.

Every person is different. Your provider will consider your unique circumstances rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Therapy + Medication: A More Complete Approach to Wellness

Supporting both how you feel and how you move forward.

At Steel Valley Wellness Group, we believe mental wellness involves more than managing symptoms. It also means understanding yourself, developing healthier patterns, building coping skills, and creating a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.

That is why medication management and therapy can work so well together.

Medication management may help you:

  • Reduce certain symptoms that make everyday life difficult.
  • Improve your ability to focus, sleep, or manage emotions, depending on your needs and treatment response.
  • Create more stability so you can participate more fully in daily activities.

Therapy can help you:

  • Understand the thoughts, feelings, and experiences affecting your mental health.
  • Develop practical coping strategies for stress, anxiety, depression, and other challenges.
  • Work through difficult experiences and relationship concerns.
  • Build confidence, emotional awareness, and healthier habits.

When these services are combined, they can complement one another. Medication may help make symptoms more manageable, while therapy helps you develop tools and strategies you can use throughout your life.

Not everyone needs both services. Your care plan will be based on your preferences, clinical needs, and goals.

With your consent, coordination between your medication provider and therapist can help ensure your care is thoughtful, consistent, and focused on the whole person.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

We want getting started to feel simple and comfortable. You do not need to have all the answers before your first visit.

1. Connect with our team

Reach out to Steel Valley Wellness Group to express interest in medication management. Our team will help guide you through the next steps, including gathering the information needed to determine the appropriate provider and appointment options.

2. Meet with your provider

Your initial appointment is an opportunity to talk about what has been happening, what you have been struggling with, and what you hope will change. Your provider may ask about your symptoms, medical and mental health history, current medications, sleep, stress, and previous treatment experiences. These questions help create a clearer picture of your needs.

3. Explore your options together

Your provider will discuss appropriate treatment options, including whether medication may be beneficial. You can ask questions, share concerns, and talk through potential benefits, risks, and alternatives.

A prescription is not automatic. Treatment decisions are made based on your individual needs and clinical evaluation.

4. Create a personalized plan

If medication is appropriate, your provider will explain the plan, including how to take the medication, what to monitor, and when to follow up.

Therapy will also be helpful. We can discuss how counseling and medication management will complement one another.

5. Continue checking in

Mental health treatment is not a one-time conversation. Follow-up visits allow your provider to evaluate your progress, discuss side effects or concerns, and make changes when needed. You will have an opportunity to share what is working, what is not, and what support you need moving forward.

In-Person and Telehealth Appointments

We understand that busy schedules, transportation, work, school, and family responsibilities can make getting care challenging.

Steel Valley Wellness Group offers in-person and telehealth medication management options, depending on provider availability and clinical requirements.

In-person appointments offer the opportunity to meet with your provider face-to-face.

Telehealth appointments offer the convenience of connecting with your provider remotely from a private location, when clinically appropriate. Telehealth services are available to eligible clients located in Pennsylvania.

Some medications or clinical situations may require in-person appointments or additional monitoring.

Our team can help you understand which appointment options may be available for your needs.

Insurance and Payment

We want you to understand your options before beginning treatment.

Steel Valley Wellness Group works with several major insurance plans, including plans through Aetna, Cigna, Highmark, UPMC, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, and Medicaid, among others.

Coverage varies by plan, provider, and service. We recommend verifying your specific benefits, copay, deductible, and any authorization requirements before your first appointment.

If you are unsure whether your insurance is accepted, contact our team. We can help you determine the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for medication management?

Referral requirements can vary by insurance plan and individual circumstances. Contact our team to find out whether you need a referral or authorization before scheduling.

Do I have to take medication if I schedule an appointment?

No. The purpose of the appointment is to discuss your symptoms and explore appropriate treatment options. Medication is considered only when clinically appropriate, and your provider will discuss the options with you.

Can I receive medication management and therapy at the same practice?

Yes. Steel Valley Wellness Group offers both services. Therapy and medication management will be incorporated into your overall treatment plan to support a more coordinated approach to wellness.

Can I see a provider through telehealth?

Telehealth medication management may be available to eligible clients located in Pennsylvania. Some medications and clinical circumstances require in-person care. Our team can help clarify your options.

How often will I need appointments?

Appointment frequency depends on your needs, the medication being prescribed, your response to treatment, and your provider’s recommendations. Initial treatment or medication changes may require closer follow-up.

What if I am worried about side effects?

Let your provider know about any side effects or concerns. Your provider can help you understand what to watch for and determine whether a treatment adjustment is appropriate. Do not stop or change prescribed medication without consulting your prescriber, unless you are experiencing an emergency requiring immediate care.

Can medication management help if I am already in therapy?

Yes. Some individuals who are already attending therapy find it helpful to explore medication management as an additional treatment option. Your provider can help you determine whether it may be appropriate for you.

How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Contact Steel Valley Wellness Group, share that you are interested in medication management, and our team will guide you through the scheduling process, insurance questions, and next steps.
